Description

How to make falafel, which is an easy falafel recipe. I show you in the falafel video and method below how to make falafel in an air fryer or by frying them in a pan on the stove. This is one of the most popular mediterranean recipes. If you are looking for a tasty vegetarian air fryer recipe, then this one should hit the spot nicely!

The reason I like air fried falafel, is because I like a crispy falafel, which isn’t dried out inside. Of course pan frying is an option if you do not have an air fryer, but healthy air fryer recipes are becoming quite popular, with people choosing to reduce the amount of cooking fat. So making falafel healthy is something we do in our home, especially if we are making one of our Mediterranean diet recipes.

I also like making this homemade falafel recipe because if you have ever bought them from a supermarket, you may also be shocked at the cost. It always astounds me when I know the ingredients are inexpensive! Give them a go and see how easy it is! There are a couple of techniques and answers to questions below on using falafels and the air fryers in particular, which may help alleviate any first time air fryer falafel mistakes.

Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 200g Can of Chickpeas drained and rinsed
  • 1 Onion Chopped (fine if not using a food processor)
  • 1 Garlic Clove (fine if not using a food processor)
  • 1 Tsp Ground Cumin
  • 1/2 Tsp Paprika
  • 1 Tsp Ground Coriander
  • Salt & Pepper
  • Handful of fresh coriander and parsley leaves, chop fine if you don't have a food processor
  • 1 Small Egg
  • Olive Oil Spray - or cooking oil if using the frying pan method.
  • Optional extras, salad, pitta bread, hummus etc.

Instructions

In a food processor blitz the onion and garlic until finely diced.  If you don’t have one chop until it is really fine.  Then add in the chickpeas, spices, fresh herbs, egg and seasoning.  Pulse the mixture until it is at a good consistency (the you tube video helps here) or if making by hand mash together with a fork.  The consistency shouldn’t be too smooth or runny.

You may want to check the Q&A below for tips and assistance.

Air fryer Method  Place your air fryer on 180 degrees for 3 minutes to pre- heat.  Then spray the top tray with olive oil spray.  Make sure it is proper coated or your falafels may stick.  Shape the mixture into patties rather than ball shaped.  Spread the patties out and do not over fill the air fryer.  Cook for 6-7 minutes one side, turn, spray again and cook for a further 6-7 minutes.

Frying Pan Method  Heat a pan with a little oil in on a medium heat.  Shape into patties, ensuring you do not overcrowd the pan.  Cook on one side for 6 minutes and turn and then cook on the other side for six minutes.

Serve with salad or my favourite way is with a warmed pitta bread, filled with salad, a couple of the patties and drizzled with hummus which has been loosened up slightly with a teaspoon of hot kettle water.
