You cannot beat a good chilli con carne recipe. It should be in everyone’s go to recipes. If you do not eat meat, then please substitute accordingly. Although I have a very good vegetable chilli recipe for you to try should you want one.
What to serve chilli con carne with?
Whatever the season, a chilli con carne recipe goes down well. Winter it warms you up, and in summer it is great to have tacos’s and cooling yoghurt with it. If you are feeding a crowd you cannot go wrong. I have made this and added taco’s, tortilla chips, jacket potatoes as well as lovely sticky jasmine rice. Most of the recipe involved ingredients that I have in my cupboard too. It is also good to make a batch of this, as it freezes well too.
I have produced a quick 1 min snap video for you, so that you get the basic idea. For the full chilli con carne recipe, then it is below.

- 1 teaspoon of ground cumin
- A can of chopped tomatoes
- 1 small can of kidney beans – drained and rinsed
- Tomato puree – approx 1 – 2 tablespoons
- 1 tablespoon of cocoa
- 300ml of water
- Salt & Pepper to taste
- Occasionally a little sugar to balance tomato acidity
Method For Chilli Con Carne Recipe
In a good sized heavy bottomed pan put in the olive oil and gently heat. Add the minced steak until its browned all over. Add the onions and garlic until they are softened. Then add the red pepper followed by the chilli powder/flakes, ground coriander and ground cumin, and stir around for a couple of minutes. Then add the salt, tomatoes, kidney beans, and tomato puree. Stir round well, then add the cocoa powder and stir in again. Place in the water. Simmer for about 25 minutes.
You do need to check it every now and again to ensure that it is not drying out. Add a little more hot water kettle water if it does. At the end of cooking it should have a nice thick sauce quality to it, so if you have too much of a watery sauce, carry on simmering on the hob. Check again for seasoning and add any salt and pepper as necessary.
This reheats and freezes well too. Serving suggestions in the narrative above.
