Ingredients
Ingredients:
- 200g halloumi cheese
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- Pinch of smoked paprika (optional)
For the Chilli Glaze:
- 2 tablespoons tomato ketchup
- 1 tablespoon soy sauce
- 1 tablespoon honey
- 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar or rice vinegar
- 1/2 red chilli, finely chopped or 1/2 tsp chilli flakes
- 1 garlic clove, grated
- 1 ginger thumb, grated (around 2.5cm piece
Instructions
Pat the halloumi dry with kitchen paper. This removes excess moisture, ensuring it stays beautifully crisp when air fried. Cut the cheese into bite-sized cubes, roughly 2cm x 2cm. (If you like things extra fun say for a party, try skewering the cubes onto cocktail sticks for easy dipping and nibbling later after air frying!). Don’t forget if you want to make air fryer halloumi fries, you can. All you do is cut them into thick fries instead of cubes.
Preheat your air fryer to 200°C (400°F) for 2 minutes. Lightly brush the halloumi cubes with olive oil, and for an extra smoky touch, sprinkle them with a pinch of smoked paprika. Arrange the cubes in a single layer on the air fryer basket, ensuring they’re not touching. If you watch the video you will see I like to get them on the air fryer grid and not the centre as much as possible. Air fry for 8-10 minutes, or until golden brown and crispy on all sides. Shake the basket halfway through cooking for even browning.
While the halloumi cooks, you can prepare the glaze. In a small bowl, combine the tomato ketchup, soy sauce, honey, apple cider vinegar/rice vinegar, chopped chilli or chilli flakes, grated garlic, and ginger. Give it a good stir to create a sticky, fragrant sauce.
Once the halloumi is beautifully browned and crispy, remove it from the air fryer and immediately brush or pour overhand coat the halloumi in the chilli glaze. Let the glaze coat the cubes evenly, ensuring each bite gets flavour. Serve hot straight from the air fryer, garnished with a sprinkle of parsley sesame or fresh coriander leaves for a pop of colour.
Notes
Don’t overcrowd the air fryer basket. This ensures even air circulation and optimal crispiness.
Cook the halloumi in batches if needed.
Like your chilli glaze extra hot? Add a few extra chilli flakes or a squeeze of sriracha for a real kick.
This recipe is easily doubled or tripled to cater to a crowd. You have been warned. They go quick at a party!
Thread the glazed halloumi cubes onto skewers with cherry tomatoes, red onion wedges, and fresh basil leaves for a vibrant summer salad.
Stuff mini pittas with the hot halloumi, a dollop of creamy tzatziki, and a drizzle of the leftover chilli glaze for a satisfying lunch on the go.
Turn this into a gourmet starter by drizzling the glazed halloumi with a balsamic reduction.
