There is a handy quick video for you on my youtube channel. Why not subscribe whilst you are there! Or go to the recipe card below to be taken straight to the video.
Treacle tart is just as good as a treacle sponge in my opinion. It deserves lashings of hot custard, cream or a good ice cream to go with it. So if you have ever wanted to know how to make treacle tart then this recipe should help you. Some people know this as golden syrup tart, and they would be correct as it does contain golden syrup and not treacle.
Why not bring back some food nostalgia in your home, by making one of the best British desserts!

Ingredients
You can use ready made shortcrust or dessert pastry if your pastry making skills are not too good.
Pastry Ingredients:-
- 110g Cold Butter
- 110g Plain Flour
- 110g Ground Almonds
Filling Ingredients:-
- 100g breadcrumbs
- 12 Tablespoons of golden syrup
- Option 1/2 – 1 whole lemon using both its zest and juice
Instructions
To make the pastry place the butter, flour and ground almonds in a food processor. Blitz and then add approximately a tablespoon of cold water so that it comes together as a dough. The video shows this method. Then place the dough in clingfilm and put in the fridge for around 20 minutes. Once cooled (or if using ready made pastry) roll the pastry on a floured surface and put into a 20cm tin. Please note that if you use a different tin size to this, then the treacle tart may turn out different. Place the pastry in the tin into the fridge for a further 20 minutes to cool. These cooling steps are important.
Pre heat your oven to 170 degrees centigrade fan.
In a saucepan place only 50g of the breadcrumbs and 6 tablespoons of the golden syrup to start with, along with the lemon zest and lemon juice if using. Gently warm it so it goes more liquid like. The video demonstrates this properly. Then add the other 50g breadcrumbs and 6 tablespoons of golden syrup and let it melt as you stir. If you find the mixture still a little too thick, you can add more golden syrup. It can be hard to get the right balance of syrup to breadcrumbs, as different breads soak up the syrup in differing amounts. So trial and error and making them a couple of times lets you gauge it. The video does help to give you a guide though. Too thick with breadcrumbs and it can go tough and too much liquid and it does not set properly.
Place in the oven for 20-25 minutes. If you find the pastry and filling colouring too much, cover with tin foil and pop it back in the oven.
Notes
Using the lemon cuts through the sweetness of the tart, which is how I prefer it. You can use half or a whole lemon (as per the recipe above).
